Alternative Clean Energy Roundup: 15 October 2013

Green power: UK solar installation heads for record
Investment in clean technology for UK has risen to £1.6bn, but sector remains under pressure amid growing energy bills

13 October 2013 - Installations of solar power in the UK are likely to top records this year, and could offset some of the expensive dependence on gas, research has found, but the global outlook for green energy is still gloomy.

Investment in clean energy around the world fell to $45.9bn (£29bn) in the third quarter of 2013, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a 14% drop on the second quarter and a reduction of a fifth compared with the same period last year. read more>>>

3 reasons to feel hopeful about the future of clean energy
It looks like all that funding is paying off

There are plenty of reasons for pessimism when it comes to climate change: The U.N.'s latest report laid out, in no uncertain terms, that sea levels could rise as much as three feet by 2100 — higher than populated islands like the Bahamas. Furthermore, it's almost definitely our fault; climate scientists at this point are 95 percent sure that humanity is driving the rise in greenhouse gases.

The good news: Humanity — at least some of it — is also working really hard to limit emissions. Here are three recent developments that will make you feel hopeful about the chances for a clean energy future: read more>>>

Study highlights smart grid's direct and indirect benefits
October 9, 2013 - A fully deployed smart grid has the potential of saving between $39.69 and $101.57 -- and between 55 to 592 lbs. of carbon dioxide emissions -- per consumer per year in the United States, according to a new from the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative (SGCC), which aims to help smart grid stakeholders better understand the economic, environmental, reliability and customer benefits associated with smart grid investments.

Customer interest in the distribution utility business is increasing with consumers and businesses demanding more flexibility and greater reliability from their electric grids, reductions in environmental impact, and lower costs. Smart grid capabilities can reduce environmental impact, operating costs and lost electricity, and increase flexibility, reliability, and customer choice. read more>>>

Cumbria pupils take up the challenge to get wind of careers in green industries
08 October 2013 - PUPILS who attended a challenge focusing on windfarms could forge themselves future careers in that growing industry.

The Vattenfall Engineering Challenge took place at The Forum, in Barrow, last week.

Pupils from Dowdales, Furness Academy, St Bernard’s, Ulverston Victoria High School and Walney School took part in the event. read more>>>

Solar and wind innovation reflected in booming patents
Just how much better can a solar panel or wind turbine be? Quite a bit, suggests the surging number of global patents for renewable technologies.

October 12, 2013 - Innovation in solar, wind and other renewable power is booming worldwide, especially in China, and is now eclipsing that in fossil fuels — an about-face that occurred in just one generation, new research shows.

In the United States alone, the number of renewable-energy patents exceeded 1,000 annually by 2009 — up from fewer than 200 per year in the 1975-2000 period. read more>>>

Wind generation sets record in Southwest Power Pool
Electricity produced from wind set a record for several hours on Thursday, according to data from the Southwest Power Pool, a regional transmission organization that covers Oklahoma and eight other states. Despite the wind record, coal continues to be the dominant fuel for the region.

October 12, 2013 - The wind was mighty on Thursday in Oklahoma and eight other states that make up the Southwest Power Pool as the regional transmission organization set a record for electricity produced from wind.

Wind provided about 6,400 megawatts of power to power pool utilities for several hours on Thursday afternoon and evening. read more>>>

Sylvania schools reviewing energy reduction
10/14/2013 - The Sylvania School District is reviewing an energy reduction plan that could chop its energy bill by more than a half-a-million dollars annually.

Officials from the heating and cooling company Trane, at Monday's school board meeting, outlined an energy efficient plan that would centralize the heating and cooling control systems of the districts 14 buildings, which includes school and administrative offices.

Also included in the plan that Education Market Leader Jim Zavesky outlined for board members was steps taken to optimize energy consumption and reduce operating costs related to light use and the heating and cooling systems. read more>>>

Kaal Masten Unveils the World's First Solar Lamp Post
10/10/13 - Take a look at the world’s first stand-alone solar lamp post! The new solar-powered Spiritlighting column can harvest electricity during the day to light up the streets at night. The studio behind the design, Kaal Masten, says the light post can be entirely powered by the sun, and it doesn’t have to be connected to the grid – so it could bring street lighting to areas without access to electricity.

Kaal Masten‘s solar lamp post can reach up to 18 meters in height, and the modular design can be tailor-made to suit a variety of environments and lighting needs. Masten say that Spirit is the most sustainable form of public lighting available. read more>>>
