Alternative Clean Energy Roundup: 18 May 2013

Occupants, designers, builders need help with net-zero facilities
May 16, 2013 - The increasing global awareness of the impact of building energy consumption on climate change is driving the efficiency of buildings.

Recent research from Lux Research predicts that materials to boost energy efficiency will reach $16.5 billion in sales in 2017. Floor space for net-zero energy buildings (NZEB) and nearly-zero energy buildings (nNZEB), will rise more than six-fold to 80 million square meters in 2017, according to Lux Research. read more>>>

Small Hydropower, a promising technology for rural electrification
14 May 2013 - It is not difficult to agree that a lack of access to energy, and more specifically to electricity, is very likely to be followed by unintended consequences for socio-economic development. To contribute to needed progress in this area, Small Hydropower (SHP) is an important solution in practice.

According to the 2012 IEA’s World Energy Outlook, it is estimated that about 1.3 billion1 people still lack access to electricity. 84%1 out of these live in rural areas. Of course, electricity alone is not sufficient to alleviate poverty, but it is the essential factor that enables active progress in all sectors related to the UN Millenium Development Goals, such as health, education, gender equality or water quality and sanitation. read more>>>

Arctic Council Prioritizes Sustainable Development, Climate Action
May 16, 2013 - Ministers from the eight Arctic states and representatives of the Arctic Indigenous Peoples Wednesday adopted a shared vision statement for the future development of the region as a “zone of peace and stability.”

“The economic potential of the Arctic is enormous and its sustainable development is key to the region’s resilience and prosperity,” states the “Vision for the Arctic.”

“We are concerned with the growing effects of climate change, and the local and global impacts of large-scale melting of the Arctic snow, ice and permafrost. We will continue to take action to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and short-lived climate pollutants, and support action that enables adaptation,” says the vision statement. read more>>>

REC Solar Completes Pioneering Colorado Community Solar Project
New program helps more Coloradans go solar and save money

May 16, 2013 - REC Solar, a national leader in solar electric system design and installation, today announced the completion of a 500 kilowatt community solar project in Boulder, Colorado. The Boulder Cowdery Meadows Solar Array is the first community solar project completed under Xcel Energy’s Solar*Rewards Community program, under which any utility ratepayer can directly purchase energy from a “solar garden” and immediately save money on monthly electricity bills. REC Solar designed and built the array, while Clean Energy Collective (CEC) will operate and maintain the system. REC Solar has additional Solar*Rewards Community projects under development and construction for completion later this year. read more>>>

Empower Energies installs four PV arrays for General Motors
17 May 2013 - Empower Energies, a renewable energy company, has completed the installation of four PV arrays at the General Motors Warren Technical Center campus in Warren, Michigan, US.

The installations comprise a 49kW ground-mounted system and three solar canopies for the charging of electric vehicles. The 49kW system is located on the north side of the centre and, according to Empower Energies, is currently generating more energy than anticipated. read more>>>

Artificial Forest for Solar Water-Splitting: First Fully Integrated Artificial Photosynthesis Nanosystem
May 16, 2013 — In the wake of the sobering news that atmospheric carbon dioxide is now at its highest level in at least three million years, an important advance in the race to develop carbon-neutral renewable energy sources has been achieved. Scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have reported the first fully integrated nanosystem for artificial photosynthesis. While "artificial leaf" is the popular term for such a system, the key to this success was an "artificial forest." read more>>>

New England, Ireland cleantech partnership a "natural"
May 17, 2013 - The U.S.-based Association of CleanTech Incubators of New England (ACTION) and The Green Way, Dublin's Cleantech Cluster, have formed a partnership to accelerate the commercialization and globalization of clean technologies and innovations.

"The historic connection between the New England region and Ireland makes this partnership a natural," said Michael Ryan, president of ACTION. "Ireland's close proximity to New England creates a great beachhead for Irish companies and entrepreneurs while offering the same benefit to US-based companies interested in European markets." read more>>>

UK and Scottish governments release report on Scottish Islands renewables potential
17 May 2013 - The Scottish Islands Renewables Project report shows that while there are benefits to developing renewables on the Scottish Islands there are also significant costs

A report released by the UK and Scottish governments concerning the potential for renewable energy development on the Scottish Islands has found that renewable generation, including onshore wind and wave and tidal, on the islands could contribute significantly to the UK’s 2020 renewable energy targets. However, the cost of deploying renewables on the islands is also higher than comparable projects on the mainland due to the expensive transmission links that would be required to feed generated power into the National Grid. read more>>>
