Whether you speak to smallholder farmers in the rolling slopes of the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda, where rainfall has dropped by more than 20% or you speak to a township dweller in the outskirts of Cape Town, whose shack has been razed by a recent fire, the story is the same. Severe change in weather patterns is rapidly eroding their livelihoods and there are hardly enough social safety nets to help them cope.

Jun 20, 2014 - Green jobs in Vancouver increased 19% between 2010 and 2013, but more work is needed to meet ambitious City of Vancouver goals to become the “greenest city” in the world by 2020, according to a report released by the Vancouver Economic Commission June 19.
Green and local food jobs currently represent 4.9% (20,000) of all the jobs in Vancouver, says the report. That’s up from 4.2%, or 16,700, in 2010.
The VEC defines a green job as “an occupation that has a focus on those activities that restore or preserve environmental quality, reduce energy, materials and water consumption, decarbonize the economy, and minimize or altogether avoid the generation of all forms of waste and pollution.” read more>>>
16 June 2014 - Off-grid renewable energy can expand clean, reliable and cost-effective electricity access in rural areas, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) said at a conference in Manila today.
The 2nd International Off-Grid Renewable Energy Conference and Exhibition (IOREC), organized by IRENA, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE), highlights that small-scale or off-grid renewable energy-based solutions offer an important opportunity to achieving universal access to electricity. read more>>>
19 June 2014 - A number of solar farms in the UK will throw open their doors to members of the public on 4th July as part of Solar Independence Day, a nationwide event organised by the Solar Trade Association (STA).
The STA has designed the event to show how solar farms can benefit local environments while reducing the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels. Schools, businesses, local householders and community groups will be among those invited to attend some of the 17 solar farms taking part in the event. Companies opening their facilities to the public during the day include Lightsource Renewable Energy, Solar Century, Juwi, British Solar Renewables, Lark Energy and BELECTRIC. read more>>>
16 June 2014 - The SCIGRIP Solar Boat Team has accomplished another milestone in preparation for the DONG World Cup Solar Power Challenge.

Developer advocates for green construction technology
Jun 20, 2014 - When real-estate developer Thomas Chartier talks about green building technology, it’s like something out of a sci-fi movie—solar-thermal arrays that turn sunlight into heat, and geothermal systems that pipe coolant 350 feet into the ground.
His newest project, a seven-unit residential building at 118 Madison St., uses some of these advancements to help alleviate city flooding, and even to generate its own electricity.
“Our goal after living through Hurricane Sandy and without power for a week was to make 118 Madison sustainable by reducing the carbon footprint,” he says. “But we also wanted to make it much more resilient.”
Instead of installing a traditional water heater, Chartier chose a machine that creates both heat and power from a single fuel source. read more>>>
June 18, 2014 - Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the City of Santa Clara's municipal electric utility, has earned the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) 2014 Public Power Wind Award for its innovation and creative utilization of wind power resources.
Instead of regularly utilizing hydro-generated power to serve day-to-day needs, SVP has access to as much as 200 MW of wind energy. Using that power when it is available allows SVP to preserve water levels at its hydroelectric reservoirs for use when electricity demand spikes during heat waves. read more>>>
Jun. 19, 2014 - SolarCity, the nation’s largest solar power provider, plans to hire an additional 100 sales employees in the next 100 days. The company will host a “100 Jobs in 100 Days” career fair at its current Granite Bay location at 4202 Douglas Blvd., Ste. 100, on June 21—the first day of summer—at 9 a.m.
SolarCity’s Granite Bay office houses the bulk of SolarCity’s current inside sales team as well as local marketing staffers, many of whom originally joined the company from Paramount Solar following its acquisition last year. As a result of the growth, the company expects to move into a larger office space in the area this year. To offer a more environmentally conscious solution, designer Hakan Gürsu of Designnobis has proposed Solar Taxis, eco-vehicles powered by clean energy for urban use. Topped by solar panels, the Solar Taxi is surrounded by a transparent outer shell that’s rugged enough for tough roads. The spacious design would also offer enough room to accommodate physically disabled passengers.
