Even Tidal Power isn’t Immune to Public Opposition
04 March 2014 - More and more companies are realizing that the prioritization of safe, reliable energy methods is the best way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By using the Earth’s natural, predictable energy from tidal power, we can generate reliable electricity while conserving other resources.

However, some environmental groups oppose new tidal projects due to fear that the turbines could impact the bay environment in a negative way instead of generating a net-positive environmental gain. Without sufficient preparation in terms of community education and citizen outreach, tidal power companies can lose control of their messaging to opposition groups who seek to delay or even cancel proposals all together. read more>>>

London tests new smart energy system for EV charging
27 February 2014 - A smart new system for charging electric vehicles is being tested in London to help get the electricity network ready for widespread use of electric vehicles

London’s electricity distributor, UK Power Networks, has embarked on a Low Carbon London trial in partnership with POD Point, Smarter Grid Solutions and Imperial College London. The project began in December 2013 and will run until April testing POD Point’s new Carbon Sync software and Smarter Grid Solutions ‘Active Network’ management system. These systems will briefly suspend the flow of electricity to selected public EV charge points at peak times on the network while ensuring drivers still receive a sufficient level of charge. read more>>>

Which states have the most clean energy jobs?
March 6, 2014 - There were more than 3.5 million job postings in the U.S. clean energy sector last year -- up 19 percent from 2012 -- according to Ecotech Institute, which categorizes clean energy jobs as part of a business that benefits the environment or conserves natural resources, based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics description. The report looks at various sustainability factors such as alternative fueling stations and total energy consumption, and was created using data from independent research entities including the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency, U.S. Energy Information Administration, and the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 2013, solar jobs were up 57 percent, wind jobs were up 20 percent and renewable energy jobs were up 9.3 percent from 2012, according to the report. read more>>>

ET Solar Builds Large Scale Solar Power Projects in UK
Mar. 3, 2014 - ET Solar Energy Corp. ('ET Solar'), a leading smart solutions provider, announces that it has entered into the UK market and has started to construct an 8.4 MWp ground mounted solar power plant.

The 8.4 MWp solar project is close to the village of Bridgewater in Somerset, about 40 miles southwest of Bristol. ET Solar has acquired the project rights from a local developer. ET Solar also acts as the full EPC service provider for this project. The project is under construction now and is expected to be grid-connected before the end of March. China takes aim at pollution after years of growth
Mar. 6, 2014 - Huge chunks of concrete and broken machinery are all that is left of a cement plant that once spewed clouds of pollution over China's most polluted province, Hebei. Demolished in December, the factory was one of 35 closed or torn down in Pingshan county as part of the government's drive to clear up China's notoriously smoggy skies.

Combatting pollution has shot up the agenda of the ruling Communist Party, which for years pushed for rapid economic development with little concern about the environmental impact. Under public pressure to reduce the air pollution that blankets Beijing and cities across China, the country's leaders are rebalancing their priorities. read more>>>

Obama admin drives ahead with new cleaner gas rule
Mar. 3, 2014 - The Obama administration is driving ahead with a dramatic reduction in sulfur in gasoline and tailpipe emissions, declaring that cleaner air will save thousands of lives per year at little cost to consumers.

Public health groups and automakers cheered the new rules, finalized Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency, with some insisting they could prove to be President Barack Obama's signature environmental accomplishment in his second term. The oil and gas industry, meanwhile, panned the move, calling it gratuitous and accusing the government of grossly underestimating the increased cost at the pump. read more>>>

Dynamic Deeds Build Clemson's Unique Test Facility
03/10/2014 - After braving a "perfect storm" of construction challenges—including mucky conditions and seismic- and wind-load concerns—the builders behind Clemson University's first-of-its-kind wind-turbine drivetrain testing facility in North Charleston, S.C., have finally found safe harbor as the university prepares to begin commissioning.

"We had heavy loads on muck in a seismic area with flooding potential and high wind loads due to hurricanes on a brownfield site," says James Tuten, program manager for the Clemson University Restoration Institute (CURI), the project owner. Indeed, project officials would have been hard-pressed to find a more challenging site for constructing the roughly $100-million testing facility, which was financed in part by a $47-million Dept. of Energy grant using stimulus funds.

Adding to the challenge was the need to build the state-of-the-art facility—housing some of the world's largest equipment of its kind—within an existing structure, as required as part of CURI's sustainability mission of revitalizing historic and urban structures. read more>>>

Gov. Malloy Helps Power Up State’s First Microgrid At Wesleyan
March 6, 2014 - In an effort to combat future widespread power outages, Connecticut officials launched the state’s first microgrid Thursday.

As WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported, microgrids are a means of providing power when storms knock out electricity to entire communities.

They provide inexpensive and reliable energy to any given community in Connecticut in the event of a huge power outage, Schneidau reported. read more>>>
