New guide helps companies report their climate policy positions
Nov. 14, 2013 - For the first time ever, companies have a guide to manage and report on their direct and indirect influences on climate policy. The UN Global Compact, in cooperation with seven leading international organizations, today released guidelines to help companies engage in climate policy in a transparent and accountable way that is consistent with their sustainability commitments.

The Guide to Responsible Corporate Engagement in Climate Policy sets baseline expectations for companies to provide proactive, constructive input for governments to create effective climate policies. It helps companies to connect the dots between sustainability commitments, such as emissions reductions across their value chains and efficiency improvements, with their corporate policy positions. read more>>>

New Energy Husum starts the call for papers for the international small wind turbine congress
Nov. 19, 2013 - The call for papers for the World Summit for Small Wind organised by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA) and New Energy Husum has started. Experts have until 15 December 2013 to submit the subjects of their talks. The international summit of the small wind turbine industry is being held from 20 to 22 March 2014 parallel to the New Energy Husum trade fair. This year the organisers are introducing a special small wind turbine forum that is open to the general public.

Strategic planning will help guide renewable energy for the grid
November 21, 2013 - The Bureau of Reclamation has released a sustainable energy strategic plan that will help guide the agency into the future as it develops and supports renewable energy production for the U.S. power grid.

"Reclamation continues to successfully generate renewable, clean and affordable hydropower as energy needs consistently grow across the western United States," Commissioner Michael L. Connor said. "It is only natural that Reclamation play a key role in facilitating the additional development and integration of renewables such as hydropower, solar, wind and geothermal to help meet the western energy demands." read more>>>

Scottish Renewables publishes standards for new onshore wind farms
08 November 2013 - The protocol will be the first of its kind in Scotland, unlike any launched in other parts of the UK

A set of standards for new onshore wind farms has just been published by Scottish Renewables which will deliver numerous benefits for local communities including improved financial benefits and a more consistent approach to the development of community benefits packages.

The new protocol will be the first of its kind in Scotland. It outlines a number of key commitments from the Scottish onshore wind sector which includes £5,000 of community benefit for investment in local projects. read more>>>

Warren Buffett's MidAmerican Energy begins $1.9 billion wind power project
07 November 2013 - MidAmerican Energy Co. has started Iowa's largest wind generation expansion, totaling 448 turbines and $1.9 billion at five sites around the state. The announcement was originally reported by the Omaha World Herald.

MidAmerican revealed its plan to developed as much as 1.050 MW of additional wind generation in the US state of Iowa in May 2013.

As of this week, construction is now underway in five sites located in Grundy, Madison, Marshall, O’Brien and Webster counties. The entire project is expected to be completed and generating power by late 2015.

New York City launches solar-powered, public space recycling effort
19 November 2013 - They look, quite frankly, like ordinary streetside recycling bins, but an initiative being expanded in New York City's Times Square, represents a significant leap in deploying solar power to improve the quality of life in one of the world's premiere cities.

The Times Square Alliance, a coalition of city government and local businesses founded to improve and promote midtown Manhattan, is ramping up the number of Big Belly solar-powered waste and recycling stations in use in the high-profile commercial district.

The pilot program launched in March 2013 with just 30 stations and was funded by a $250,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation. This past week, the number of receptacles was increased to 46. read more>>>

Europe Devotes 20 Percent of Budget to Climate Spending
November 20, 2013 - At least 20 percent of the entire European Union budget for 2014-2020 will be spent on climate-related projects and policies, after the European Parliament Tuesday approved the budget for that seven-year period.

The 20 percent commitment triples the current share and could yield as much as €180 billion in climate spending in all major EU policy areas over the seven-year period. (One euro equals US$1.34 at today’s rate of exchange.)

The EU’s development policy will contribute to achieving the 20 percent overall commitment, with an estimated €1.7 billion for climate spending in developing countries in 2014-2015 alone. read more>>>
